Story - BC Federation of Foster Parent Associations
Foster parents take care of and care for children in our communities when their birth families are unable to.
The BC Federation of Foster Parent Associations serves the interests and needs of foster parents and their community associations, helping them bring a safe caring home, a family connection, and a sense of belonging and value to children who otherwise may not receive it.
Today approximately 65% of the young people who end up homeless on the street were, at on time or another in the Provincial Foster Care System. We want this situation to improve.
Parents are best positioned to help young people make a successful transition to becoming responsible and able citizens and members of our communities. Caring parents help children build their personal strengths, demonstrate that people do care for one another, and give each child a sense of connectedness and family to sustain them throughout their lives.
The challenges faced by foster parents are frequently greater than those by birth parents since 70% of the children we welcome into our homes have hidden disabilities meaning they require greater care and more support and assistance to find a place in and become a positive contributor in our communities.
Our foster parent associations are engaged in a group effort to develop ideas and learn from our experiences to determine what to do and how to do things better to create a positive, appreciative and contributive life for the young people and adults who emerge from the surrogate care we provide for them. Our interest is to improve our connections with the children we care for and improve their ability to feel and be connected to others and to their communities.
As a group, and within our communities as groups, we are interested in keeping each other informed, providing resources needed to help foster parents help their children, learning from our experiences, and creating ideas and initiatives that help us do better and be more successful in helping children who have lost their home, their feeling of belonging, and their sense that they are valued and cared for.
